Need help figuring out how to work with your oboe section? This document talks you throught the fundamentals of oboe playing, as well as what equipment your students should be using and tips on how to improve your oboe section's intonation.

Based on a presentation by CMU professors Dr. William Aikens, oboe and Dr. Susan Hess, bassoon, this document describes how to start or transfer students to the oboe and bassoon. It addresses the physical and social traits required for a successful double reed student, as well as the pros and cons of switching students to oboe or bassoon from another instrument. Information  on equipment and reeds (what and where to purchase), as well as pedagogical materials that directors can use to aid in the development of their double reed players. Fundamental concepts such as embouchure formation and tone production will also be addressed, along with digital solutions to private lessons for more rural schools.
